Matthew Gibbon Whillier - Double Bass

Matthew started his double bass studies at age of 17, having played the cello previously for 10 years. After less than a year he was offered places at all the main music colleges in England and chose to continue his studies where he received classes from Duncan McTier, Michael Calder and Rodney Slatford. While there he was awarded various prizes and began working with professional orchestras in the north-west of England including the BBC Philharmonic and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.

At the beginning of his professional career he had the good fortune to accompany figures like Yehudi Menuhin and Mistislav Rostropovich .

Before taking up his position as co-principal double bass in the ¨Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla ¨ in 1991 he had played solo bass in the European Community Chamberí Orchestra touring Europe and America extensively. In Seville he has participated in the prestigious concert season and played many operas in the ¨Teatro de la Maestranza ¨ since the creación of the orchestra and theatre there.

As a teacher he has always been in demand to coach the regional youth orchestras as well as giving master classes in several conservatoires.
